Alberobello

Alberobello, immersed rises on the Itria valley a hill 420 m. above sea level, surrounded by olive groves, almond trees, cherry trees and vines.

The dominant feature of Alberobello are the trulli, white features homes with peaked roof. Trulli are typical domed buildings, exactly a cylinder surmounted by a cone, all it built entirely of stone. Strolling through the narrow streets, there are trulli that house souvenir shops, sweets and liqueurs. The trouble is right there: if you enter one of these shops you are sure that you will not go out with an empty stomach! Yes, because it is impossible not to be kidnapped by the great hospitality of the Apulians, who invite you to enter, sure to shop, but they do not skimp on offering you tastings of their typical products, from almond biscuits to liqueurs with the most disparate flavors, a real explosion of taste and sensations in a single walk. And this is also well known by the Japanese and the Chinese, that every year, rubbed, they visit this village after completing their itinerary in our Peninsula. At Alberobello, the walk can start from the Belvedere Terrace which offers a breathtaking view of the town, an evocative moment to be enjoyed slowly.

Satisfied by the sight of the trulli, you begin to visit, step by step, the village where you can meet the ladies who work the "orecchiette" and the trullari masters who work the stone. In Piazza XXVII Maggio there is the "Casa Pezzolla" Museum, 15 magnificent 18th century communicating trulli. This museum embodies the tradition and history of the trulli. Afterwards, we move on to the Craft Museum in the Aia Piccola area: here there are tools and handicrafts. In the end, with the Wine Museum, which tells the story of the production of Alberobello wine, the tour of the local museums ends.

The Trullo Sovrano, located behind the Church of Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano, it is the largest trullo in the country: a two-storey building dating back to the 1700s. The church of Sant’Antonio, in the monti district, instead it is the only church in the world in the shape of a trullo. Its structure, so impressive, takes your breath away and, when you enter, one is caressed by a mystical silence, despite the background buzz of visitors. You can breathe a sigh of relief after a long walk and sit there inhaling the smell of incense. From Alberobello you can move to the neighboring villages to visit two other jewels of the Murgia: Cisternino and Locorootondo.
